Ask how the contractor will approach the repair
Describe what has stopped working, where you see damage and what you have already checked. Ask the contractor to explain what they need to inspect before recommending replacement parts.
For LP-gas work, ask whether they have an LP-gas manometer available. For roof work, ask whether their proposed repair follows the RV manufacturer's procedure. These are specific questions a contractor should be able to answer, rather than assurances that they can handle anything.
If the explanation is unclear, ask for the proposed work in writing before authorizing it.
Compare the scope as well as the price
An RV converter swap costs $400 to $700. When comparing estimates, ask which replacement unit each contractor proposes and what work the quoted amount covers. Do not assume two quotes describe the same job just because both say “converter replacement.”
Ask for parts and labor to be identified in the estimate. Clarify whether the amount is fixed, what could change it and whether additional work requires your approval. Ask about the completion schedule and any parts or labor warranty, rather than assuming either is included.
A quote outside the range needs an explanation, not an automatic accusation that the contractor is cutting corners.

Check permit requirements without confusing house rules with RV repairs
Harlingen requires permits for regulated building or structural repairs and regulated electrical, gas, mechanical and plumbing work. Contractors doing permitted work must be licensed and registered with the city. For work that falls within those requirements, ask who will obtain the permit and request proof of the contractor's license and city registration.
Harlingen's adopted residential code is the 2024 International Residential Code for one- and two-family dwellings. That residential code does not, by itself, establish whether a particular RV repair needs a permit. If the requirement is unclear, confirm it with the city before work begins. Do not treat a contractor's general statement about house repairs as an answer for your RV.
